Opioid agonist therapy (OAT) involves taking medications like oral buprenorphine/naloxone, methadone or injectable extended-release buprenorphine to treat opioid use disorder. These medications reduce cravings for opioids and help to manage withdrawal symptoms. OAT can help improve stability and day-to-day functioning. For some people, OAT can be a long-term treatment and for others it may be shorter term. OAT medications are prescribed to be taken on a daily basis like many other medications. However, they are often dispensed by a pharmacist on a daily basis, and are subject to additional dispensing fees. This additional cost can be a barrier to accessing treatment for Albertans who do not have health benefits coverage.

To date, the earliest known case of HIV-1 infection in human blood is from a sample taken in 1959 from a man who’d died in Kinshasa in what was then the Belgian Congo. It’s this fact which keeps me awake at night. Imagine, for a moment, that the HIV virus in that 1959 sample had been studied and identified. If, in the 1950s, the scientific community realized the potential harm this new virus could unleash. What could we have done? What therapies could we have developed before it became one of the deadliest pandemics in human history? Would we have a cure by now? Imagine if we could travel back even further to be there when a hunter chopped into the flesh of a freshly killed chimpanzee and the virus slipped into our species for the first time.

However, a fundamental quality of degenerate matter is that increases in temperature do not produce an increase in volume of the matter until the thermal pressure becomes so very high that it exceeds degeneracy pressure. In main sequence stars, thermal expansion regulates the core temperature, but in degenerate cores, this does not occur. Helium fusion increases the temperature, which increases the fusion rate, which further increases the temperature in a runaway reaction. This produces a flash of very intense helium fusion that lasts only a few thousand years (instantaneous on astronomical scales), but, in a matter of seconds, emits energy at a rate comparable to the entire Milky Way galaxy.

Why do we hold onto faulty assumptions? Because the brain is wired to convince us we are right, even when we are wrong. A psychological phenomenon called confirmation bias causes us to ignore information that is inconsistent with our beliefs. Bad news and contradicting evidence are disregarded. Why? According to research conducted by Bojana Kuzmanovic of the Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research in Cologne, anytime we hear information that supports our assumptions, the brain activates two areas of the prefrontal cortex associated with other rewards, like food and money. We look for information that supports our beliefs because we receive a reinforcing boost when we find it. Even when we are 99% wrong, the brain looks for the 1% so it can say, “Hey, you were right about this decision. Congratulations!” This is why beliefs are so difficult to shift—the brain loves to be correct. It will give us the equivalent of an adrenalin rush, even when we are wrong.

Clouds are made up of tiny water droplets or ice crystals that form when water vapor in the atmosphere cools and condenses around a tiny particle of dust or salt floating in the atmosphere. Without these particles, known as condensation or ice nuclei, raindrops or snowflakes cannot form and precipitation will not occur. Cloud seeding is a weather modification technique that improves a cloud’s ability to produce rain or snow by introducing tiny ice nuclei into certain types of subfreezing clouds. These nuclei provide a base for snowflakes to form. After cloud seeding takes place, the newly formed snowflakes quickly grow and fall from the clouds back to the surface of the Earth, increasing snowpack and streamflow.

about

Crawling but never stumbling or unsteady.

Lurching forwards with purpose.

A strategic retreat.

Live to fight another day.
