A PALEONTOLOGY LABORATORY APPROACH TO RADON HAZARDS, DETECTION, AND MITIGATION Gavin McCullough Arizona Museum of Natural History Mesa, Arizona Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that occurs as a product of radium or uranium decay. In recent years, radon has been identified as a serious health hazard in residential and industrial environments, the EPA estimating that about 20,000 lung cancer deaths are radon-related. Radon poses a risk of lung cancer to non-smokers, and a far greater risk of lung cancer to smokers. Recently the AZNMH tested its paleontology laboratory and storage vaults for radon, based on observations that the parent sediments contain uranium. After testing with store-bought radon detectors followed up by testing by an environmental/industrial safety company, we discovered that Pliocene fossils collected from southeastern Arizona are sources of elevated radon levels (above 4 pCi/L, the EPA “action level”). Immediate action included 24-hour active ventilation, simple dust control measures, and increased passive ventilation during work hours. The results of our action are that paleontology lab radon levels have steadily decreased at a rate of 0.10 pCi/L per week. In addition, we are scheduled to receive an industrial-grade ventilation system as part of a safety upgrade allowance. Radon detection is inexpensive and mitigation is not complicated, but health risks due to radon exposure can be severe. Radon testing should be emphasized as part of environmental safety regimes in laboratory and industrial situations that work with fossils, rocks, or create mineral dust as part of their work.

The Pickering Nuclear Station is the 4th oldest nuclear station in North America — and the seventh oldest in the world — and is located closer to a major urban centre than any other nuclear generating station in North America; Retiring the high-cost Pickering Nuclear Station will reduce Ontario’s electricity costs by $1 billion per year. The Pickering Nuclear Station is no longer needed to keep our lights on since we have a large electricity surplus and export more power than Pickering produces. All of Pickering’s reactors will have exceeded their original 30-year design lives when the station’s Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission operating licence expires in August 31, 2018; Beginning immediate decommissioning and deconstruction of the plant when its licence expires will create 32,000 person years of employment; The Pickering Station has a troubled history of performance and safety problems (details here and here; also view our video interview with nuclear researcher Dr. Frank Greening ), including the worst accident ever at a Canadian commercial nuclear station — a major loss of coolant accident in December 1994 ; Operations at Pickering continue to produce highly radioactive waste for which Ontario has no plans or facilities in place for long-term storage despite the fact that there is currently more than 36,000 tonnes of high level fuel waste in temporary storage at Ontario nuclear stations and this material will need to be secured for thousands of years...

One day, when I was in Grade 10, I was in my bedroom doing math homework. My mother walked in. She told me I’d received a marriage proposal. I laughed. “Mom, what are you talking about?” I asked. She didn’t crack a smile, and I realized she was serious. “I’m only 16,” I said. “I’m not ready for marriage.” She told me that I was lucky. The offer came from a nice man who lived in Canada. He was 28 years old and worked in IT. His sister was a friend of hers. The woman thought I’d make a perfect match for her brother—I was very tall, and he was six foot two. “They’re going to look so great together in pictures,” she had said to my mother.

In the above list, heroin is the only direct derivative of opium, which originates from the poppy plant. The other opioids listed are synthetic substances derived from morphine. While the terms opiate and opioid tend to be used interchangeably, opiate actually refers to the substances that are closely related to opium, while opioids is an umbrella term that encompasses both naturally occurring opiates and synthetic (and semi-synthetic) opioid drugs like OxyContin.

What Started The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire? On March 25, a Saturday afternoon, there were 600 workers at the factory when a fire began in a rag bin. The manager attempted to use the fire hose to extinguish it, but was unsuccessful, as the hose was rotted and its valve was rusted shut. As the fire grew, panic ensued. The young workers tried to exit the building by the elevator but it could hold only 12 people and the operator was able to make just four trips back and forth before it broke down amid the heat and flames. In a desperate attempt to escape the fire, the girls left behind waiting for the elevator plunged down the shaft to their deaths. The girls who fled via the stairwells also met awful demises–when they found a locked door at the bottom of the stairs, many were burned alive. Those workers who were on floors above the fire, including the owners, escaped to the roof and then to adjoining buildings. As firefighters arrived, they witnessed a horrible scene. The girls who did not make it to the stairwells or the elevator were trapped by the fire inside the factory and began to jump from the windows to escape it. The bodies of the jumpers fell on the fire hoses, making it difficult to begin fighting the fire. Also, the firefighters ladders reached only seven floors high and the fire was on the eighth floor. In one case, a life net was unfurled to catch jumpers, but three girls jumped at the same time, ripping the net. The nets turned out to be mostly ineffectual.

In fact, the knowledge in this report is at such odds with what your doctor tells you about cancer, most people reading this page will not go on to read this entire report. It sounds too good to be true. So one of the biggest issues that you have to wrap your mind around is the obvious thought, “If the information in this report, and the supplements recommended, are so good, why isn’t everyone using them.”

Karachi nuclear power plant is located on the Arabian Sea coast, approximately 18km east of Karachi and has been in service with a single 137MW reactor unit (Kanupp-1) since 1972. It is owned and operated by Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC). Construction of the Kanupp-2 and Kanupp-3 reactor units started in August 2015 and May 2016, with the start of commercial operations scheduled for 2021 and 2022, respectively. Reactor units will have a design life of 60 years and account for roughly 10% of the country’s total generation capacity.
